Asia Argento was born in Rome, Italy, into an extended family of actors and filmmakers. Both professions she has herself pursued. When she was nine the actress made her acting debut in Sergio Cittis Sogni e bisogni. In 1988, Michele Soavi's The Church was directed by Michele Soavi and she played the role of Cristina Comencini's Zoo. Next, in 1989 she played Nanni Moretti's (also directed) daughter in Red Wood Pigeon. In 1993, she played a part in Carlo Verdone's Perdiamoci di vista where she portrayed Arianna, a physically disabled girl--an intricate, difficult character that earned she the David di Donatello Award for the most outstanding actress . Asia's feature-length debut came in the form of Scarlet Diva (2000) in 1999. In it, she was the lead actor and also wrote the screenplay. The film premiered on May 20, 2000, in Italy and the rest of the world. The film was honoured at the Williamsburg Festival of Brooklyn, New York. In 2001, following the directing of several music videos, she gave birth to her first child, Anna Lou. In 2002 Asia appeared on The Red Siren with Jean Marc Barr, and Rob Cohen's Action-Thrille, directed by Vin Diesel. Asia has also written some short stories which have been published by many magazines.
